I was at a Maine Women’s Network event this week listening to Elizabeth Ross Holmstrom of BreakTogether talk about taking time out of our busy day to just BE. Holmstrom had us sit, close our eyes, and do nothing for two minutes.
Go ahead and try it, set your timer for two minutes…and do nothing…breathe…don’t talk…don’t solve probems…just BE.
How did you do? It’s hard to just BE! If you are like many people, it’s nearly impossible not to feel an urge to do something. Maybe you were feeling an intense need to read all the emails you have to respond to, or maybe you have a meeting you need to prepare for, or you were making a list of things to do today – or all of the above.
We have become a society addicted to “doing.” If we are not “working” we are checking emails on our phone, responding to text messages, or looking at posts on Facebook.
In an article in Mindful Magazine, Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter write about our addiction to doing. They state, “As we keep ourselves occupied with tasks, important or not, we avoid facing life. We keep a safe and comfortable distance to the issues that are sometimes hard to look at. Have we chosen the right career? Are we present enough with our children? Is our life purposeful?”
So what are you avoiding by being overly busy? When we are too busy, we don’t take the time to listen to our soul’s guidance. Your seventh (crown) chakra is your connection to Higher Power and clear the path to your soul.
Many of us have a crown chakra deficiency that has been replaced by an excessive reliance on the third (solar plexus) chakra. The third chakra is the energetic home of our will power, sense of purpose and effectiveness. By continuously “doing” we hope to somehow achieve a feeling of purpose and effectiveness. Unfortunately, the faster we go, the further behind get.
There is plenty of mindfulness research that shows the immense benefit of taking some time to just BE. You will improve your mood, effectiveness, and productivity. Here are a few two-minute ideas to help you become a Human BEing rather than a Human DOing:
Spend two minutes just drinking your tea or coffee before you start work.
Set a timer every two hours, spend two minutes breathing when the timer goes off.
Take a two minute silent walk without a phone or device.
Stare out the window for two minutes.
Eat your lunch for two minutes without doing work; better yet eat your whole lunch without doing work.
The more you take two minutes to just BE, the more clarity of purpose and meaning your will find in your life.
