Once upon a time there was a woman named Sleeping Beauty who was a thoughtful person that tried hard to make good choices for herself, but found that she didn’t always succeed. Even though she thought she was awake and lived a mostly conscious life, she was sleepwalking because she was secretly controlled by Goblins who lurked in the shadows of her subconscious and mimicked her voice. These Goblins caused Sleeping Beauty to occasionally suffer low self-esteem and emotional overwhelm that sabotaged her ability to get to True North, which is where she really wanted to live.
She had 7 Goblins who were the major source of her distress. Their names were:
- Judgy – who was very judgmental of Sleeping Beauty (SB) and others, but covered it up with feigned superiority.
- Pity – frequently hosted pity parties where SB was the star victim and martyr.
- ‘Fraidy Cat – told SB that it was too scary to make changes. It was much safer and easier to do what felt familiar.
- Mizz Perfect – was a control freak. She wanted SB to be and act perfect, and for SB’s life to be predictable.
- Blamey – assumed no responsibility for her actions and told SB that when things went wrong, it was the fault of others.
- DoBee – kept SB busy…always doing something. That kept SB from looking at the real problems.
- Meekly – told SB to stay quiet, keep the peace, and don’t make waves, so others won’t get mad.
Deep down, Sleeping Beauty was hoping that a prince on a white horse would come to rescue her, but truly the only way for Sleeping Beauty to wake up was to get the Goblins to come out of the shadows and show themselves.
So Sleeping Beauty set out on a Shadow Quest – which is exactly what I’ve been doing the last few weeks. I’ve been peering (yet again) into the shadows of my childhood wounding and discovering there is more of my true self (True North) to recover. My own Sleeping Beauty shows up when I feel anxious, especially when there are uncontrollable situations and events, and there is lots of that going on in the world right now. The Goblins above are mine, and one in particular has been very noisy lately – Meekly (surprisingly).
Working with our inner Goblins is one way to harmonize the energy in the first (root) chakra. Some of the energetic goals of the root chakra are safety, security, belonging, health, and home. Goblins are born when an essential part of our being is wounded – usually in childhood. Often, their purpose is to keep us safe in situations where we felt unsafe as children.
As a child, Meekly helped keep me safe – if I stayed quiet, and didn’t “talk back”, I didn’t get in trouble with my parents, teachers, and other authority figures. So, I learned to keep my anger in check and curb some of my stronger opinions – except now that doesn’t always serve me. Meekly has actually thrown some tantrums recently with family members, as well as, a professional connection. Meekly is tired of being the “good girl” and making others feel emotionally comfortable.
As part of my own Shadow Quest, I am working with a counselor and doing some Goblin work. This includes inviting Meekly into my morning meditations, where I imagine her sitting in my lap while I hug her. I’m also journaling conversations with myself, Meekly and a Spirit/Soul Guide, where Meekly is allowed to “have her say”.
As I converse with Meekly, I’m learning how to love and take care for her in the ways she needs at this point. Her tantrums are subsiding and are being replaced with authentic opinions from a place of heart and wisdom.
So, are you feeling anxious about what’s going on in your life or in the world? Is there a Goblin present? If so, try getting to know it by allowing it to “talk” to you through journaling. It’s a powerful way to start a dialogue with a part of yourself that’s been hiding and in need of nurturing.
Sending you light and love,
Nanette
Got Goblins?
Let’s Do a Shadow Quest!
Goblins represent different aspects of your inner hidden shadow-self. They are born when an essential part of you was wounded. It may be that you were abused, abandoned, shamed, or some other personal suffering. After that you live out of a false sense of self. Goblins lurk in the shadows of your mind, and mimic your voice. They trick you into thinking you are worthless, unlovable, or a victim. They hold you hostage through low self-esteem, self-sabotaging beliefs, and feelings of lack. They are that part of you that needs love, forgiveness and healing. As you get to know them, they are a great opportunity for personal growth. Like in the fairytale, Rumpelstiltskin, once you know their name, they no long have power over you.
Let’s quest together. Shadow Quests and Goblin Work is part of my training as a Certified Master Intuitive Coach that I did with Colette Baron-Reid.
