Viral fear is damaging us energetically, spiritually, physically, and emotionally. But, it’s hard not to get sucked down the vortex of negative thoughts and feelings. I can’t tell you how many times in the last few weeks, I’ve found myself holding my breath. Truly, there seems to be collective breath-holding as we humans navigate our way through the new COVID-19 landscape.
In the chakra system, the breath is energetically correlated with the fourth (heart) chakra – and yes, I am sick at heart! There are billions of people planet-wide in pain. So, how can we keep breathing, physically and energetically, through our unknown future? How can we stay in our heart center, while feeling fear and uncertainty?
First, we must all remember to breathe – literally! My daughter has an AppleWatch that tells her when she isn’t breathing deeply enough. If you have a similar device, you can set it to prompt you breathe. In leu of that, stop whatever you are doing, and take a few deep breaths. Do it several times a day. Set a timer to remind you, if you have a tendency to forget. This will help calm your limbic (fight, flight or freeze) system and release constricted heart chakra energy.
Second, allow yourself some time daily to sink into your heart chakra/heart center. What do you find there? Sadness? Heart-ache? Loneliness? No matter you find, just let it be there. Feel it. Allow yourself to fully take it in. We tend to run away from heartache. Yet, it’s hard to stay in our heart center if we ignore what’s there.
Next, name what you find! In the fairytale Rumpelstiltskin, it was only when the Queen named the goblin, that he no longer had power over her. Similarly, by naming your heartache, you start to shift it. As it shifts, you will find space for more compassion for yourself and others.
With a compassionate heart, you will nurture the love within yourself, despite your pain. The heart chakra encompasses love of all human kind, your larger community, the earth, and of course, yourself. COVID-19 has given us an opportunity to truly see how globally connected we are. Energetically, when we nurture love and compassion for ourselves, it ripples out into the world.
Currently, we are all fearful, we all feel uncertain about the future. Breathe into your heart chakra, name the heartache and release it with your out-breath. Breathe in again, and imagine your heart filling with love and compassion, spreading throughout your whole body, and rippling out into the world at large.
Sending all of you love and compassion!
