When feeling fear, sending compassion and love to yourself and others can help shift the energy (Photo – The Love Lock Bridge – Paris)
Do you feel it? Fear! It feels disruptive, polarizing, heavy! It threatens our emotional and energetic well-being.Lately, I’ve talked to many clients who are devastated by the current polarizing political energy. Many more people I know, are consumed with exhaustion from holding the tension of all the heavy world events. Morality, ethics, right use of power, honesty, and transparency are just some of the issues that divide us – creating an energetic vortex filled with conflict, doubt, anger, sadness, and an overall feeling of helplessness as we watch how things play out.
Several of my clients have changed course personally and/or professionally in an effort to affect the divide by participating in venues that invite dialogue to create understanding and bridge the gap of dissent. I really applaud this!
I believe the only way forward is to let go of the “us” and “them” attitude and engage with each other in authentic conversation. Truly, there is no “us” and “them” it’s all “us”. In the Universal sense, we are all one. We are both villain and hero depending on perception.
I have strong political views on moral use of power, and ethical personal conduct. There are times I get angry and start picking sides. Then I catch myself, and search for some sense of love and compassion within myself.
I don’t have to agree with what is being said and done to practice love and compassion for those I feel at odds with. They also have fears pushing their reality.
Human fear drives so much of our behavior. Fear of powerlessness, fear of not having enough money, fear for our safety, fear for Mother Earth, fear for our loved ones, fear of losing our job, etc…
I am practicing love and compassion for those disrupting my sense of right and wrong. Mind you, I’m not doing it perfectly – there are days it all goes out the window. And that is also part of my practice, noticing when I get triggered, and can’t find a scrap of compassion in my heart, let alone love.
If, like me, there are days you are finding it hard to find love and compassion in your heart for those you feel at odds with, here are a few 4th (heart) chakra balancing tips.
- Listen to guided heart meditations. I love Tara Brach’s Heart Meditations when I am feeling overwhelmed
- Practice kindness, tolerance and acceptance with those with different views than your own
- Create a list of people and things your are grateful for
- Create a forgiveness practice, “I forgive (fill in the name)”
- Say heart centered affirmations: “I am compassionate.” “I forgive easily.” “I love unconditionally.”
Disagreement from a heart centered place, is very different than disagreement out of anger or fear. Your heart knows the way; speak and act from your heart.
