Invoking the Fifth…Chakra

Through creative expression, you will find that the voice of your soul speaks to you. Nanette Giacoma

“Invoking the Fifth” is a popular phrase that refers to a witness’s refusal to testify in a trial on the grounds that the testimony might incriminate them/him/her in a crime. But, when it comes to energy, invoking the fifth is a powerful way to tap into your fifth (throat) chakra and release the creative voice of your soul.

While Initial creative passions emerge in the second (sacral) chakra, the fifth (throat) chakra is where you communicate your creativity out in the world. This may be art, a craft, a business venture, a book, a blog, a hobby, dance, singing, or a profession. There is no limit to what your creative expression might be.

I can honestly say that my business is one way I express my creativity. But, when it comes to finding a way to overcome an obstacle, a creative process is an invaluable tool to connect my throat chakra with my soul’s intentions.

My soul speaks to me in signs, symbols, and metaphors – the language of the sixth (third-eye) chakra. A creative process gives me a way to open my throat chakra energy and receive these messages. Some of my creative processes include, writing, collage, and making masks.

On the surface, it doesn’t look like I’m working on an obstacle in my business, but the creative process takes me into my right (creative-intuitive) brain, which loosens the hold my left (rational-analytic) brain has on me. As I allow myself to fully engage my senses in my art project, I let go of looping thoughts, and I open the door to inspiration.

I always come away with a new perspective about the obstacle. Sometimes, I find there’s not really an obstacle at all, just my monkey mind playing tricks on me.

Do you have an obstacle you can’t seem to overcome? Try a creative process to connect the energies of your throat and third-eye chakras. In my book Open for Business are instructions for easy-to-make Mandalas for each chakra (see below). I’m sharing the process here. It’s a great way to get out of your head and into your soul.

  • Use a template to draw a circle on a blank piece of paper or cardboard. A paper plate, pie tin, or pizza stone will do nicely, depending on how big you want your circle. Cut out the paper circle with scissors or a utility knife if using cardboard. Fill the circle with any color(s) you feel an affinity for, using a pen, pencil, paint, or marker. This represents your obstacle.
  • Draw, paint, or glue images and symbols within the circle that express how you feel about that obstacle. You may wish to use pictures from magazines or found objects from nature or other sources such as leaves, feathers, seeds, buttons, ribbon, glitter, etc. The cardboard works best if you plan on gluing heavier objects on your mandala. Let go of the VOJ (Voice of Judgment) and allow yourself free rein. This isn’t supposed to be a great work of art, just an honest representation of how you feel.
  • Once you are done, look at your mandala. What do you notice? What draws your attention? Write about your mandala. Your soul-self will help you freely express whatever comes to you. Write faster than you can think. Let your hand write the words, instead of your conscious mind. Pay no attention to grammar, punctuation, or spelling, and don’t worry about whether it makes sense or not. Continue writing about your mandala until you feel you are done.
  • Then review what you have written. What insights do you have? How do they relate to the obstacle? What solutions present themselves? Was there even an obstacle to begin with?

I know our culture does not always support art-making. But, I assure you creative processes will help you align the energies in your sacral, throat and third-eye chakras to create more clarity for you in your personal life and business.
