Daily, we are being asked to walk uncharted terrain. It’s hard to find a clear path forward when life feels disrupted by all that is going on – COVID-19, current events, and the ever-present unrest. It can be confusing, overwhelming and mentally exhausting. Our ability to stay on our path in the midst of disruption lies in a balanced third (solar plexus) chakra. Perseverance is related to the inherent rights correlated with the third chakra: I act! I choose! I will! I intend!
As your magical powerhouse, your third chakra helps you stay the path to reach your goals. It gives you the strength to get up, again and again, when the flying monkeys come for you. It helps you choose wisely when you feel imprisoned in a situation. It helps you take action in the face of adversity and uncertainty. Ultimately, your third chakra helps you take your vision and mission, and move them into actionable steps toward your goals.
So, what do you do when the flying monkeys come? The first step is to name them. In other words, identify your obstacles. The following is a technique developed by the CEO of Body Mind Health, Alison van Zandbergen, and her associate Ann Washburn.
Overcoming Obstacles Exercise
- On a blank piece of paper, draw a stick figure on the far left of the page. To the right of it draw five vertical lines. To the far right of the lines, draw a star.
- The stick figure is you or your business. The vertical lines are your obstacles. The star is your goal.
- Write your name or the name of your business under your stick figure.
- Write down the goal that you are working on under your star.
- Below your drawing, write down each obstacle – a, b, c, d, e.
- An example of business obstacles might be:
- There are too many competing agendas and too much politics.
- People are mired in how things have been done in the past.
- An example of personal obstacles might be:
- I lack self-confidence to reach my goal.
- I don’t feel I have the authority to make needed changes to reach my goal.
- For each obstacle, write down what you need to do to overcome your obstacle. For example, for the obstacle in 6 above (People are mired in how things have been done in the past), you might write down the following.
- Recognize and reward myself and/or others for reaching benchmarks toward the goal.
- Reward myself or team members for creating new solutions to old problems.
This exercise is a great way to get your right and left brain working together to overcome your obstacles. The results can then be incorporated into action steps that will help you reach your goal, even in the face of flying monkeys.
Sending you energetic inner power and focus!

doTERRA Essential Oils can be a BIG help when trying to stay focused and mentally present in the midst of distractions. Diffuse a combination of peppermint and wild orange essential oils to get energized and feel uplifted at the same time.
A major component of focus is the atmosphere you surround yourself with. If possible, choose one room or location to do your work in. At least fifteen minutes before you begin, create a focused environment by diffusing the following essential oils by themselves, or in a blend:
- Basil oil: Perfect for those that need mental clarity, Basil is great on its own or when diffused with Peppermint or Cedarwood.
- Douglas Fir oil: Like the deep and grounded roots of a fir tree, the aroma of Douglas Fir gives you a sense of focus. It can also help you change your mood if you need a more positive outlook.
- Eucalyptus oil: Clear the mind and chase away tense feelings by putting a few drops of Eucalyptus into your diffuser.
- Spearmint oil: Something about mint oils just invigorates the mind. The aroma of Spearmint stimulates a sense of focus and, like Douglas Fir, uplifts your mood.
