Dreams have powerful symbolic meaning – if you choose to pay attention to them.
The Dreamer is a sixth (third-eye) chakra archetype, and can be a powerful ally when seeking answers to personal and professional questions or challenges. This can be especially helpful when stuck in limiting beliefs that are getting in the way of your path forward.
Dreams speak to us through our unconscious mind in the language of signs, symbols and archetypes. When you tap into your dreams, you tap into what C.G. Jung calls the collective unconscious. The collective unconscious are universal symbols and archetypes that exist in most cultures. You most likely know of some of these, like the great mother, divine child, wise wo/man, hero, or trickster.
Through your dreams you tap into this shared universal wisdom. So before the World Wide Web, humans shared an energetic psychic web that transcended cultures. This is the sixth chakra at work!
Working with your dreams at the unconscious level allows you to delve into your imagination. Through it, you are able to step outside of your habitual thinking and see yourself, your life, or your business with less distortion and more accuracy.
We are not taught to pay attention to dreams in our culture. We are not encouraged to receive the symbolic wisdom that surrounds us daily. Don’t let your rational (thinking) brain talk you out of the wisdom you are receiving.
Recently, I dreamed I was test driving a red sports car (I always wanted a red sports car). Throughout the dream I am running into issues. First, I can’t find a place to park the sleek red car; then it floods where I initially park. I finally find a parking place in front of an office building, but then (mistakenly think) someone steals the car. Ultimately, I decide I deserve to buy the red sports car, and I drive happily down the highway to purchase it at the dealership.
This is an example of an integration dream. I am integrating an old, limiting beliefs (that I don’t deserve the car of my dreams) with the realization that I’m the one with the keys to my future.
In this instance, the red sports car symbolizes my desire to make more money in my business. (Red is the first chakra color, and money is a first chakra concern.) All the obstacles are my limiting beliefs – the reasons why I can’t make more money. The decision to purchase the car, is my unconscious mind telling me that I have the ability to make more money in my business. All I have to do is get in the driver’s seat, and spend the time, energy and money on marketing to get where I want to be.
Two other categories of dreams are self-limiting dreams and new myth dreams. A self-limiting dream reinforces your belief that you are somehow flawed. Which might include thoughts that you are a failure, poor, disempowered, etc. You might dream of being pursued by a bad person, or showing up to work in your underwear.
A new myth dream helps you create a new and improved story about yourself, and helps to counteract your limiting beliefs. Maybe you dream you are incredibly wealthy, or you can suddenly fly like an eagle.
Perhaps you rarely remember your dreams, or never remember them. Here are six ways to help you tap into the wisdom your dreams:
- Before going to sleep, do a short breathing meditation, and set your intentions to remember your dreams.
- Have a journal ready nearby, so upon waking you can immediately record your dream while still fresh.
- Write down your dream in the present tense, as if it is happening right now. Record symbols, colors, feelings, people, and any other details in your dream.
- Write down whatever comes to you, even if it is only an impression, a fragment, or a feeling.
- Allow your unconscious mind free reign to help you imagine what you need to know, even if you don’t remember the dream fully.
- What does your intuition tell you about the meaning behind the dream images and feelings. The more you let your intuition lead, the more wisdom you will receive.
If you examine your dreams and work through the archetypes, symbols, and messages contained within them, you will find the answers and insights you need to move forward on your path.
